What's the Difference Between ORM and SEO?
Online Reputation Management (ORM) and Search Engine Optimization Management (SEO) are both broad topics. However, the difference between them can be summed up, this way: Search Engine Optimization Management usually involves generating links (often hundreds or thousands) as well as content, to drive up a specific business website in Google rankings, and generate business from doing so; Online Reputation Management, can sometimes often be the opposite. It involves generating content, and using different techniques to make sure that specific "wanted" content that was created, ranks higher than other content that is not owned by the company or person in question, that is "unwanted" (or in other words, the target content to be gotten rid of). So SEO is often about driving specific search results UP, and ORM usually involves driving certain “obnoxious” content DOWN.
They are similar in that they both involve influencing search engine rankings, but they often involve different types of thinking, different strategies, and different approaches. While ORM does use link-generation, it often uses it much, much less, and it usually uses it more as a precision tool than using it more as a numbers game. ORM also generally does also not focus on the website of the business (or person) itself as much, but the websites that are causing business to be lost (or other problems) in general.
