Are There Types of Damaging Content That Can Be Removed?

Yes, but it’s very limited. Most negative articles and reviews that both businesses and individuals may face, that harm their internet search results on Google and other similar platforms like Yahoo and Bing, fall under the auspices of Freedom of Speech. They therefore, cannot be directly “removed” in the purest sense of the word (although it’s still possible to deal with them, in general). Even the most virulent and obnoxious personal attacks against anyone often fall under this domain, but so does other harmful content, such as newspaper articles about bad events from the distant past or events taken out of context. In most cases, a targeted Online Reputation Management Campaign is needed to suppress these negative listings for good, driving them far down in internet search results, making it highly unlikely anyone will ever see them again; and indeed, studies show and confirm that it is for the most part the case -- that, once these listings are suppressed enough, they will no longer be able to harm a business or an individual.

However, though most comments, reviews, and articles (etc.) are "Free Speech," and cannot be physically “removed” from Google quite that way, there are exceptions. The most notable of which fall under American defamation law; thus users should read our sections on Libel and Slander to understand what does and what doesn’t qualify, and contact a lawyer if need be assuming your case falls under that jurisdiction. For example, if a newspaper article writes down “statements of fact” (rather than opinions) about things that have occurred in the real world incorrectly, you may have a case.

Another example, are reviews on a website like Yelp that violate their “Terms of Service.” Users on those platforms can make nasty, insulting, and debasing remarks about anyone (this type of thing tends to especially occur against businesses), but if there is any swearing, direct physical threats against someone, or other type of violent comments associated with that particular user, then 9 times out of 10 it violates the site’s “Terms of Service,” and you can contact them and request those comments be removed and/or that user banned. You can also contact us and request we do it for you, since it’s often better to have a neutral or objective party speak for you in circumstances such as that, since they can sometimes be emotional.

Or, if you live in Europe, then you fall under the scope of the European Union’s “Right to be Forgotten”. This means if a listing on a search engine is “Outdated, Irrelevant, or No Longer Relevant,” then you can directly request it be physically removed from a search engine under law. Only in the EU do you have this option, as in the United States, Canada, and other places, it does not legally exist.
